5 Innovative Ways to Remain Active in the Summer

Summer is almost upon us! Although, with the passage of Memorial Day weekend, for many, it's already here. With the warmer weather comes a draw to the outdoors, and the indoors becomes less and less appealing. Between the increased parties, activities, vacations and improved weather, you probably have lesser desire to exercise indoors.

Here are some activities that will keep you fit during the summer while maximizing the season's benefits:

  1. SWIM - Swimming is a very effective way of burning calories and improving metabolic function. If you're looking to keep yourself in shape in the summer without having to train indoors in a gym, try swimming every other night! Swimming freestyle for an hour can burn up to 600 calories, and any excess body fat will begin to fall off.

  2. WALK/HIKE - Man was designed to walk long distances and sprint short distances. Walking or hiking for 3-4 miles a few times per week will keep you in shape during the those warm summer days. The average person walks about 3 miles per hour, so this distance should only take about an hour or so. Long-distance walking is one of the most effective forms of exercise because it is low-stress on the knees (compared to running) and keeps your heartbeat at a constant, elevated rate. Hiking, especially in rougher terrain, is even more effective.

  3. OUTDOORS HIIT - If you're still looking for a fast-paced, intense workout, HIIT (high-intensity interval training) can be done outdoors. HIIT only lasts about 15-20 minutes and can be done virtually anywhere. Research HIIT routines that you can do with body-weight or at-home, and then do them outdoors! You'll be able to enjoy summer weather while ripping up your core and improving your musculature at the same time.

  4. VOLLEYBALL - Many municipalities have local volleyball clubs/groups that you can join from the late spring to early fall. These groups meet a few times per week and are comprised of locals with great camaraderie. This type of group sports is a fun and effective way to remain fit throughout the warmer months. It doesn't specifically need to be volleyball, as any group sport will yield beneficial effects.

  5. CANOEING/KAYAKING - Often overlooked, this form of outdoor exercise will rip up your core, which will constantly be engaged while canoeing or kayaking. If you live near/on a local pond, lake, bay or even ocean, go kayaking for an hour or two every few nights during the week. If you're only able to travel on weekends to kayak, supplement your kayaking or canoeing with one of the aforementioned options during the week.

Summer is a huge respite from long and brutal winters, especially for those in colder environments. So, it's natural to want to be able to profit from the outdoors as much as possible. These 5 options will keep you fit and lean well into the summer months, and you may not even hate it!
