The Science
Assuming that an individual has not had any external, nutritional source, there are 3 areas that the body uses for energy, in this order:
Carbohydrates - stored as glycogen stores in the liver, the body is able to break them down the fastest for energy, so these reserves are targeted first.
Muscle/Protein - once the body runs out of glycogen stores, it begins targeting the body's own muscle for energy. This is why exercise is important with dieting, as well as an adequate amount of protein consumption to stave off any muscle breakdown by the body.
Fat - the most difficult to break down, this is the last area that the body will use for energy stores. There are 9 calories per gram of fat, whereas there are only 3 calories per gram of protein or carbohydrate. So while the body will break down both fat and muscle simultaneously, it has greater difficulty breaking down fat.
The Solution
The body begins to run out of glycogen stores (i.e. energy) quickly into a workout, after which point it begins to target muscle. In order to stave off this breakdown, the essential amino acids of leucine, isoleucine and valine ("BCAAs") are needed to stimulate anabolism, i.e. muscle growth.
